Brief / profile
Covering a total area of 16,800 square meters, the Id Kah mosque is a complex of ancient Islamic buildings with strong religious flavor. As the largest mosque in China, it attracts over 10,000 worshipers every Friday.

Location

This mosque is situated on the central square in Kashgar, Xinjiang Uigur Autonomous Region in the west China.

Function or value in the past

It was built to pray for the souls of the ruler’s dead relatives at first.

Construction

The mosque is 140 meters long from north to south and 120 meters wide from east to west, consisting oft the Doctrine Teaching Hall, the Gate Tower, the Hall of Prayer, a pond, a big courtyard and other structures.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The courtyard is just inside of the gate. The whole place is heavily shaded due to the luxuriant polar trees and pines, providing a natural summer resort.
Besides, a pond is surrounded by green trees. As for the Hall of Prayer, it stands in the west of the mosque and its roof is supported by blue pillars with fine carvings.
Facing the Id kah Square, the Gate Tower is mostly decorated by delicate green carvings.
History
Built by Shakesimirzha-the ruler of Kashgar in 1442, Id Kah Mosque enjoys a history of over 500 years. It was regarded as the core of the region’s Muslim culture. Later, it had been renovated and enlarged several times and finally displays the current appearance.
Transportation.
As for the transportation, tourists can take bus No.77 or 13 to get there.
Admission fee.
The admission fee for this attraction is RMB 30.
Note
It’s open to the public from 8:50 to 10:00 and we advise you to take a tour there for one hour. In addition, ladies are recommended to wear head covers when watching the proceedings in the mosque.
